Challenge
To Vocational Educator

Technical and
vocational education is the one of the most skilful courses which is need to produce
the people which is need to support the economics of the country based on the
market need. More than that, these courses not only need to develop skill
worker, but the student also needed to have a critical thinking for improving
human characteristic in solving their problem based on the situation. So in
this article, the author wants to analyse the dilemmas and practical tensions
in implementing competence-base education in vocational courses. This article
also based on the powerful learning environments that used on the
competence-base education which is more focus on the both authentic and
self-direct learning.
In this article, they
have several characteristic in making the authentic and self-direct learning in
the vocational education. One of the characteristic is the teacher need to
formatting the vocational identity as the starting point for learner. As the practical
skill need in the vocational school the author thinks that every teachers need
to re-adjust their thinking which is the curriculum of the teaching in
vocational education need more to skill work rather than base only on the
theory. Next, the teacher also needs to create the practical skill more
flexible which is not only based on the assignment, they also need to arrange
for their student to works on their assignment based on the existing work
condition. So the student will be able to see the real world of the environment
based that related with the assignment. The teacher also need to be a coaching
to their student and to make sure their student may be able to reflect what
they learn from their real world of working environment. So in the end the student
will be able to self-reflect and being able to developing their self-regulation
skill.
From the article of the
challenge of the vocational educator in developing student authentic and
self-direct learning in vocational education, we can see that most of the
characteristic more to the step for improving the educational environment of
the education institution. Based on the article I mostly agree with the
characteristic that they want to used in making the institution of vocational
education have an self identity. It is because most of the vocational
institution in Malaysia assign their institute as only for educational part.
But for the deep of the technical and vocational institution, they need to
provide the skilful student that masters on both theoretical and practical
skill to make our citizen toward the technological people.
